Daily Comment

I came this close to deleting my Facebook account today.

I have been having a good deal of difficulty with the IM communications with the band, which we do on Facebook since the drummer can't send and receive text messages on his company-issued phone.

But he can get to Facebook.

The problem with quickly-written communications, and with all short-form written communication is that nuance is not easily interpreted, and, of course, tone of voice and inflection are non-existent.

It is fertile ground for miscommunication. And there was a lot of that in communications with the band today.

Coupled with the fact that the newsfeed has a majority population of uninteresting, unfunny, insulting, trivial, and/or offensive and badly worded/spelled items, and a minority of entertaining, interesting, thoughtful, useful items, and I got frustrated.

So I did nothing.

  1. You have your cel in your hand and you are going online to type a message to your other bandmembers cels. This is convenient because you are all able to get the messages at the same time. This is not true convenience, since the results are often Miscommunication. Would'nt the solution to this problem be to use your cel-phones for voice and voice-mail communications? The only drawback would be the amount of calls and messages between bandmembers. That procees can probably be streamlined, you all are clever enough. The upside will be improved communication, and reduced medium caused misunderstanding.

    1. The problem is the serial nature of the communications. If the only time we used these was to deal with logistical issues, no problem. But as soon as people start expressing opinions, it always ends in apologies. Dumb. As bad as e-mail, maybe worse since it happens with less time to think between statements.

On the other hand, I might be frustrated because I'm feeling misunderstood. Oh, Lord!

  2. I like to text more than talk because it is more private. I work in a cubicle where everyone can hear what I say.

    1. Good for logistics, conveying information. Lousy for interpersonal communication.

  3. Had to laugh in agreement with your comments about Facebook. While it has its practical uses, most of its appeal seems comparable to keeping up with the latest gossip. I often quip that deleting my Facebook account is on my bucket list, but in the end the result is the same as yours: I do nothing. --Dan R.
