In a terrible bit of timing, yesterday was Syracuse's most beautiful day of the year: Sunny and warm. At about one in the afternoon I felt a little tickle in my throat. By five I was coughing. By eight I was coughing a lot, and feeling weak and feverish.

I feel like shit today, after getting only a little sleep. Tomorrow, I fly to New Orleans for a week, for JazzFest.

No refund available for my airfare or AirBnB, so I'm going, despite.

I'll be sick in New Orleans, if this doesn't just turn out to be allergies, which is what I thought it was until I felt feverish, but I'm hoping that is it, and NOLA is the cure.

What I fear most about it is that it may be the same thing that every single person I know up here has been dealing with sometime in the last month or so. I fear that it is the same, and that is a tenacious, long-lasting illness, usually taking weeks to get over.

We'll deal.

Anyway, this will be my last blog until the day after I get back (which means you'll see it next day: Friday, May 4).

I'll write a trip report then.

I am still looking forward to NOLA, and thinking about where I'll go after I get back. During May, I have only one hour of playing on my schedule, in the exact middle of the month. I want to visit New York City. I want to go back to Florida. I may have the bandwidth to do both.

I'm grateful to have choices - or the illusion of choice, if that's your philosophical take.

It's been a while since I commented, and a lot has happened, but, pretty nothing left a mark, or changed my regular day-to-day life.

I guess I'm writing today to update my overall physical condition, because I just had my regular six-month checkup, and it was extraordinarily good, the latest in a series of improvements over the last couple of years, that led from having checkups every three months to checking every four months, and now, six-month intervals.

That, in itself, is a testimony to my doctor's optimism.

The results of the blood workup I did last week were just perfect. Nothing out of whack. Nothing. That's a first in my adult life - I have never had any blood analysis come back so clean and well-balanced.

It made for a very light and smiley visit with my doctor. We talked about my trip to Thailand, and I showed him some of the pics I took. The last time I saw him, it was all about the medical prep for my trip. He found it remarkable I had not gained weight after that trip (I actually lost weight, and have been trying to recover from a weight gain involving my Florida and New Orleans trip after).

He was interested when I told him I'd been blogging my food, and how I'd read that the one thing almost all successful dieters (people who had lost weight and kept it off for more than a year) had in common was keeping a food journal, and that I had been blogging mine the whole time. He got this blog's url, and said maybe other patients would be interested.

So, this was a good start to the day.

Another thing that happened since my last Comment was a change in my band, Scuba Gear. While I was away for a couple of months, a new band, Modafferi, was formed so that Brian Modafferi (Scuba Gear's main songwriter and guitarist) could play with his brother, Nate. Then, separately, there were some problems with Josh, Scuba's drummer, and Scuba Gear officially evolved into Modafferi, same as Scuba with a different drummer.

I liked Scuba Gear (and Josh, who I still like), but I have to admit, Modafferi is a better band with the same repertoire.

Tonight we're played our first gig, at Al's Wine and Whiskey, a bar I like very much, in downtown Syracuse. It was a great success, even with some rough patches, as the overall sound of the band was good, we got a good crowd (bar owner/booker very happy), and an audience that was enthusiastic and, at the end of the night, complimentary.

It was a workout for me, and I ended the night with some muscle-soreness and very, very tired.

So, this was a end to the day, and I'm nothing but grateful (and, as I said, sore and tired).

Well, if the dial is only going to move slightly, I'd prefer it moving down. So, that's good, but... I want a bigger reward for being on-plan, as I was yesterday. I want more loss than this when I'm "good".

It's nice when I lose weight, not so much when I gain wait, but really, it's the sustained effort that gets results, and when I travel, little effort is made. That being said, I have been back for over a month, and have not kicked back into my normal post-travel lose-the-weight and back-to-maintenance eating that has usually followed my jaunts. But I am dedicating myself to doing the right thing right now.

 Food Log

Liquid Intake
Espressos: 1;   Coffee: 0 oz.;  Tea: 0 oz.;  Water: 48+ oz.;  A good pour of Redbreast Irish whiskey (I so like Al's), and most of a beer - no idea what kind
