I think my theory is right: There's now way I could eat that Chinese food (which was untypically good for Chinese takeout) and a half pound of cheese at one in the morning and not gain weight if my thyroid hormone levels weren't right.

I have a new theory about my sudden weight-gain yesterday: Low thyroid hormone. I realized this morning I had skipped my first-thing-in-the-morning synthroid. I bet my weight comes down at tomorrow's weigh-in.

I think this bad performance can only be due to late-night high-calorie eating. I think that because I was 100% on-plan as far as what I ate, but my huge dinner, with high-glycemic vegetables and a lot of fatty protein seems likely to be what did me in.

What a weekend! It's good that I checked in with a low weight Friday, because Saturday and Sunday resembled my old cheat day eating habits. Because of that, I'm very happy to still be below the trendline. (I confess, a considerable amount of the willpower and common sense I usually take for granted was destroyed by drugs I took this weekend). So it goes.

A great week, weight-wise: I lost weight every day, including Monday. I don't know if this has happened even one time since I started working on maintenance in July, 2011. But now it's happened, and here I am, more than seven years later, under 'goal' weight. Happy dance!

Aretha died today.

I remember the first time I heard her. I was hanging out with Tom Jones, my high school best friend who introduced me to Soul music.

Although I had heard and liked her music before Respect came out, it was that record that made me a lifelong fan.

When it was announced she was dying, I felt bad. Today, when I found out she was dead, I experienced a flood of emotions. As I played her songs, I began to grieve. When I saw her performance at Kennedy Center, I cried from the moment she takes the stage to the standing ovation at the end. It was cathartic.

For fifty years her music moved, inspired, entertained and informed me. Among the singers I love most, hers was the greatest voice.


She had a unique place in my life.

I will always be grateful for the gifts she gave me: She helped define music for me, and showed me its power like nobody else. RIP, Aretha.

I thought my weight loss over the last few days was a little extreme, and I guess after a day of normal, on-plan eating a correction could be expected. Here is is. Still, a good recovery from the excess of last weekend, and this one-day gain could be due to nothing more than forgetting to take my thyroid hormone replacement (which I did on Thursday).

Aretha died today.

I remember the first time I heard her. I was hanging out with Tom Jones, my high school best friend who introduced me to Soul music. We were at his parents house, hanging out with some of his friends, listening to music. We were just goofing around, and this record came on, and it eclipsed everything going on in that moment.

I don't remember which song. But it was Aretha, and I had never heard anyone sing like that before.


When Respect came out, it was that record that made me a lifelong fan. It also widened my ideas about Soul music.

When it was announced she was dying, I felt bad. Today, when I found out she was dead, I experienced a flood of emotions. As I played her songs, I began to grieve. When I saw the video of her performance at Kennedy Center, I cried from the moment she takes the stage to the standing ovation at the end. It was cathartic.

For fifty years her music moved, inspired, entertained and informed me. Among the singers I love most, hers was the greatest voice. I also learned something about songs from Aretha: Any song can be re-imagined to make it your own, to say something about you, if you have found some personal meaning in it.


She had a unique place in my life.

I will always be grateful for the gifts she gave me: She helped define music for me, and showed me its power like nobody else. RIP, Aretha.

There you have it. A lot of this loss is water-weight due to yesterday's very low-calorie intake (and possibly slight dehydration, thanks to an extremely sweaty outdoors gig from which I may not have rehydrated).
