First, at our first duo gig in a couple of months, Chad came apart a bit. He played a high percentage of the 16 songs in the set badly, in particular, arhythmically. Bad enough that it was a poorly attended gig. But it was actually videotaped, and I'm afraid to watch the results.
It has occurred to me that Chad doesn't listen to what I play. Some inner dialog is happening that allows him to completely ignore any rhythm I have set up. If I start a song with a vamp, he comes in off-beat, and, if there are two or more chords involved, off-beat and on the wrong chord. He did it twice last night. Once, after he started a song wrong that way, he went so far south that I couldn't follow him, and sat most of the song out.
I know this sounds like a punch-line, but it isn't funny. During that song, I watched him very closely to try and discern if he was having a stroke. That's how off it sounded to me (and looked - I watched his chording the whole song. It was, er, eccentric, and seemed to be playing catch up with the vocals.
All this played out against a backdrop of concern about tomorrow's i am Fool gig. We were sharing the gig with a band that - at 6 o'clock the day before gig, canceled. They had a good reason, but it was what happened after that.
Things got a little political, and once again, an instant message thread was the vehicle for some misunderstanding and I got my feelings hurt.
So, venting. Sorry, guys. Bad night.
