The driver's side door was open, ajar. Inside, the glove compartment and center compartment were empty, the GPS unit was gone from the glove compartment.
The back was empty, too. My bass amp had been there the night before. I went to lift the back gate, and it, too was already open.
My immediate reaction was a little sick feeling of loss. Then I checked to see if the car would start.
I went to the office to figure out how to contact the police. The car was undamaged, only those two things missing. The amp was a pretty expensive item, so just those two items put the put the robbery into felony territory.
I called the police, then looked up the two items to establish their replacement value. I posted what I had lost on Facebook, the better to alert my local musician friends to be on the lookout. I arranged to buy a replacement amp for my gig right after work.
The policeman didn't come to get my report until 4 PM. He took my report with an attitude, trying to make me feel more like the guilty person than the victim. I didn't like his attitude, and that was the worst part of the day. By then, the new amp was in the back of the securely locked car, along with my bass, ready to leave for the gig as soon as I was done giving my report.
Nobody died. I lost some property. I made the decision not to look back, just get another amp and move on.
