Which leads me to recommend Mob City, the cops-and-gangsters show that started last week.
I can't recommend the show except for one thing - the wonderful soundtrack of this show. Mark Isham scores the show with what seems to me to be the entire spectrum of post-war West Coast jazz: hot jazz, cool jazz, blues. I was knocked out by the score. And, at least in the pilot, there were a number of scenes showing the music in performance, with all the LA/Hollywood post-war-period costumes and settings.
As a drama, the show isn't bad, but it isn't really my cup of tea. The shades of gray in the characterizations run from neutral to black: There are no good guys. At this point, it looks like the 'hero' is a cold-blooded murderer working for the police, in the Dexter mold: his victims are bad guys who've committed capital moral crimes. There's a lot of typecasting going on, and the Fox-R-rated period noir dialog is trying too hard.
But the soundtrack. I'll watch and listen to every minute of this show just to see what Mark Isham is up to.
