September 26

Daily Comment

Today, after what I regard as a rather serious misunderstanding in a group message thread (with the band), and one too many political rant, selfie and animal picture, I deactivated my Facebook account.

I can't believe how bad being on Facebook had begun to make me feel. I had to cope with feelings of anger, sadness and shame. And for what?

Today, I couldn't come up with the positives. I will miss only seeing the pictures of my friends.

Look at the results of a day of adequate hydration, and no snacking! That, as they say, is the ticket. And kudos to Andy for giving me the in-person figurative 'smack upside the head' that led to this turnaround. Hopefully, it is that: Turning the corner on what has been a bad six months.

    1. He said stop eating protein bars right away. Which I pretty much did, after making a meal of them. He also said stop cheat days. Which I had already done, but since I'm going back to NOT cheating all the time, I might bring them back.

  2. I've always thought Facebook was overrated, whether at $44 per share or $18. Its best use is, as you suggest, the sharing of photos and documents. It is not a good venue for political debate, as I can attest to from personal experience. However, I remind you: it's one thing to deactivate your account, another to DELETE it! Anyway...here's a link I wanted to send you last week that I'm confident you'll enjoy:

    1. Wow! Thanks for the link! My mother was PS 209's first PTA President, and never felt she got any recoginition during or after her tenure. It was, however, her single venture into politics, and it inspired her to become a teacher (she subbed at PS 209 a few times while she was student-teaching).

As to Facebook, well, I never considered investing in it, and, as a mix of good things with bad things, I miss enough about it to leave the door open for my coming back. Which I intend to do shortly before retirement. Although, that may change.

As to your other point, I found it useless for any exchange of ideas. People get crazy 'discussing' things when they think there's an audience, and on FB, there is always an audience.

  3. Someone posted the link at the "Did you grow up in Clearview Gardens" page and I wasn't certain whether you were a member (it was posted before you deactivated your account) or had seen it. Glad you liked it!

The Facebook prices were meant as symbolic, as I'm not in a position to invest and wouldn't if I could. I often joke that deleting my account is on my "bucket list," but there seem to be too many temptations for that to happen anytime soon. It's got its uses, certainly, but political debate seems to function best when there's some agreement on assumptions. Otherwise, if you think Facebook is bad in this regard, I remind you of the comments following Yahoo stories! --Dan
