Daily Comment

I had the yin and yang of music tonight. I played at two different open mics. 

At the first one, I backed up some musicians I know, who I have found to be undisciplined and lacking in listening skills. Playing with them is frequently difficult, because they are rhythmically and vocally sloppy, so it is difficult to groove, or find some melodic hook to hang a rhythm part around. I guess things came out all right, I had a good drummer, but he was confused by what the boys out front were doing as well. 

Believe it or not, even though I wasn't satisfied with the results of that jam, it was not unrewarding. Being challenged that way forces me to push myself a little harder, because I am out of the easy comfort of being with musicians whose abilities I have confidence in.

This is in contrast to my next stop, where I walked into a situation with a keyboardist and a drummer. No guitarist, no vocalist/leader. As I plugged in, I realized the keyboardist was playing Miles Davis' All Blues, a song I know well, and rarely get a chance to play. The jam was on, and I stayed up with a series of drummers and singers, and, even, one of the guitarists from the earlier jam. Although I knew some of the people, I did not know the keyboard player who was central to the jams. 

I found myself inspired by the easy, comfortable grooves of accomplished musicians who have the capacity and ability to swing. We did, and it was exhilarating.

You put yourself out there, and hope for the best. You get what you get. It's all good.

Not too bad, considering yesterday's starting weight and the planned seriously off-plan end-of-day snacks I had during yesterday's High-Carb, High Calorie day.

Cocoa-kale-hemp-chia seed-protein shake: Kefir, almond milk, kale, cocoa, hemp seeds, a large egg, vanilla whey powder (24g protein),  cinnamon, vanilla, psillium and stevia-inulin blend.

Dinner
Skipped.

Snack
Hard-boiled eggs, guacamole, baby carrots, home-made mayonnaise.

Liquid Intake   
   Coffee:  30 oz.   Water:  80+ oz.
