I finally got to play some music on Saturday. My premier open mic, originally the Sunday Blues jam at Rooters (now Valley Blues House) built a stage in the back, which faces on a large parking lot, and they've gotten permission (from the police and Syracuse government) to play live music.

They also are painting the entire side of the building behind the stage in a nice pattern, have cut through the wall to create an outside serving window, and built tables. The work goes on, eventually there will be a cover for the stage (and steps - right now, you get onstage by walking on staggered pallets).

Saturday at about 3pm, I got a text message telling me there would be an open mic beginning at 4pm. I immediately replied I would be there, but it took me a while to get myself together, and get my amp and cabinets out of storage and loaded into the car.

I got there around a four-thirty, and I was alone, except for Heidi, the owner/manager. I made a Facebook post. I sent some messages. People started showing up, although the first few weren't musicians, but then the guitarist who'd invited me arrived (he'd been there earlier, then left to run errands), then another guitarist, and then the drummer, and we started jamming.

More people came, and then former bandmate Midnight Mike, a singer and harp player, arrived, and that kicked it up a notch.

The weather was great at the start - partly sunny, temperature in the mid-sixties. It was great playing weather. That was, unfortunately, the high temperature, and it got chillier as the afternoon waned.

I played for about two-and-a-half hours straight, then turned it over to a bass-playing friend, who played another forty-five minutes. I was chilled from being under-dressed for the evening temperature, and I was aching from out-of-practice muscles being stressed by standing and playing with a bass for that long (as well as all the loading in I did and helped with).

But I felt great! I was exhausted, not only from the playing, but also from smiling for the whole evening.

I felt really good - it was great seeing my friends, it was great to play in a group (I hadn't done that since late February!). It was great performing.

I'm grateful for the good times with good friends, and for the health that allows me to participate.

Ugh. A bigger bump in the road, and one I wasn't expecting. I stayed pretty on-plan over the weekend, except for a pretty sweet Margarita, I didn't go far off (although I did eat a lot). Oh, well, I'll be better. I did take a few full doses of the muscle relaxer, I resumed tapering today.
