At the open mic at Shifty's last night, I didn't get to play my own set, as I mentioned yesterday. I didn't mention that I could have gotten up for a song at the end of the night, but since I had already played, I deferred to a woman I had seen waiting all the time I'd been there.

I left just before she finished her song, thinking the night was over. She was good. Next day, my friend Rolland, who was house bass player and runs the open mic posted on Facebook that they gave her a good long set, ending the open mic late to accommodate her. I found out she was from Rotterdam (Netherlands), and her boy friend was making a documentary on open mics in the US. I'd seen him taking video, including during my set, but not known their relationship (I didn't talk with either of them).

After an early gig tonight, I went to Rooters Lounge to jam, and saw the two of them again. This time, we spoke quite a while. I showed them the Facebook posting, and the correspondence I had with him after seeing the post, congratulating him on being a nice, generous guy, and wondering if he knew how I could see the documentary when it hit, somewhere down the line (he didn't know).

They said they'd found more open mics every day in Syracuse than the had in New York City, which surprised them. What surprised me was when they told me how old they were - she was in her fifties (I'd guessed thirties) and he was seventy-one, and I'd taken him for forty-something! These two are doing something right! I recommended some other spots, only to learn they were leaving for Cleveland on Friday, then to Wisconsin, then Chicago.

I am now Facebook friends with Eveline, the singer, and pointed her to the i am Fool website and Facebook page, as well as to my friend Rolland, so I'll get to keep in touch with their journey going forward.

For reaffirming what I feel about the Syracuse music scene, for holding open mics in the same high regard that I do, I am really grateful for this brief encounter.

I continue to shed the weekend's weight gain, although I know the activities I am going to be doing next weekend mean I'll be rinse-repeat cycling (gaining and losing) again soon... It's a weekly cycle.
