The subject was statin drugs. My cholesterol profile has been awful, in different ways, for more than twenty-five years. The blood test I took after my birthday weekend in NYC had elevated LDLs and very high triglycerides.
When my doctor suggested I re-start taking a statin drug, we had a nice discussion. Pros and cons, philosophy, etc.
There is a lot of material on the web about the "cholesterol hoax" and even more on the dangers of statin drugs.
Half the people who die of heart attacks have no cholesterol problem. Statin drugs have a long list of undesirable side-effects. My diabetes, although well-controlled by diet, adds to my risk of heart disease, already pronounced due to a really bad set of genetics in that area.
The conversation came to an end with him saying, if I, my son, or my father presented your blood panel, I would prescribe statins and make sure they were compliant. My personal observation has been that statin drugs have reduced heart events among my own patients. I have no axe to grind, and I'm not in bed with the pharmaceutical industries - I prescribe generics.
So, I'm on a low-dose statin. Back on statins. We'll see how that turns out.

do you get side effects? is that your objection? If not, I think even if it ultimately turns out not to be effective it can't hurt.
ReplyDeleteI've been taking Lipitor or its generic equivalent for the past 10 years.
