A few chores, then much day-off indolence before another fun gig with the newly renamed Bradshaw Blues. I was flattered that a few of my musician friends came by to check the group out, and appeared to have a very good time.

My personal music scene has really been on a roll lately. Part of the reason is a Rosemary's Baby-ish series of last minute subbing gigs.

I jammed at an open mic about a month-and-a-half ago with the guitarist-leader of the band, and we really meshed. He was impressed with my ability to pick up his tunes and play interesting bass lines that supported him, told me how much he enjoyed the jam, and expressed his desire that we work together some time.

We played together a few more times at the same open mic, always with good results. Then, he invited me to sit in on a few numbers at a gig. When I saw who his bass player was, an acquaintance who is a very well-known and highly regarded fixture in the scene here in Syracuse, I declined, saying that I didn't think it was right to step on his toes in such a formal setting - if he had asked me to sit in on a break (it happens more than I mention) I would have gone along, but he didn't.

Then, he got sick, and I was called to sub at the last minute. I mentioned it a few weeks ago. That was supposed to be a one-off until he could resume his duties.

A few days later, he ended up in the hospital. Very sick. Possibly mortally sick. I have subbed for him in that group twice since he landed there.

It creeps me out a little bit, the way that situation unfolded, but I'm not thinking of some grand Cosmic conspiracy, or that I made a deal with the devil. I'm helping another musician in need because of circumstances I didn't create.

I am really glad I didn't take the stage that time, though.
