February 6 - Alex's birthday

Daily Comment

I'm thinking about my son Alex today, and have been since I went to bed last night (after midnight), so, yes, today.

I'm a little bit... wistful - I only got to speak with him long enough to say, "Happy Birthday." Bad timing for that call.

And I'm remembering the Winter day twenty-seven years ago, when I drove to St. Francis Hospital in Poughkeepsie, NY and, a few hours later, met him for the first time. Remembering the feelings I had that day. Those feelings have, over the years, never left me, and I continue to feel them as I write this.

The memory is a little faded, but I can still conjure the feeling.

Poughkeepsie, NY was where my father's parents lived when I was very small. It's a disconnected thought, but one that just popped into my head, out onto the page.

Happy Birthday, Alex.

You mean the world to me.

I am very proud of the person you have become, the person you are.
