I don't want to belabor the point, but...

When I first started filing tax returns, at the age of 16, I did them myself. When I incorporated in 1970 (Ice Nine, Inc., and no, I didn't realize that was the name of the Grateful Dead's publishing company), I got an accountant, a friend of the family, to do them for me. That only lasted three years. Then I went off the grid for a few years (nothing but cash income), and when I went back on (in 1975, I worked for six months at a friend's company in order to get fired and participate in an Unemployment education program), my grandmother, who had trained to be an H&R Block preparer, did them for me.

Once I started working for IBM, I did them myself, again.

When the first version of Turbotax came out, in the late 1980s, I started using software to prepare my Federal return, and a few years later, when it was available for North Carolina, I did all my returns by computer.

So I have been doing my taxes myself for forty-three of the last forty-eight years.

This year, and only this year, it has all gotten fucked-up. A small glitch in the software I used didn't paste over highlighted fields, and my Federal refund got sent to a defunct checking account, and my e-filing for NY State has not been accepted after four weeks.

I know what will happen in the case of the Federal return - they'll process the refused deposit and cut me a check and send it to me through the post office. That should take about six more weeks.

What's going on with NY? No clue, and no idea what to do about it.

And that's what's on my mind now.

And now, for something completely weird. As I put the period on that last sentence - quite literally, I am not playing with time...

I got a text message saying my NY tax return had been accepted.

I'm speechless.

You heard it here first.
