Daily Comment

Spent the day at the Wailing Trailer studio with my friend Frank Stepanek (owner, recording engineer and amazing guitarist of November's Pismo Beach jam fame) and i am Fool leader J. and new member Tami.

I was there for morale (mostly mine, nobody really needed any). Tami and J. did all the recording and I gave the occasional opinion and, more rarely, the suggestion.

Magic is happening there. Working on a track, Clever, that I had thought was burdened with an unsalvageable original instrumental performance, Tami's instrumental and vocal work was transformative. I am excited about the results we're getting.

This is the best part of working with talented people who have their own perspective. She made additions that would never have occurred to me or J. Such originality is startling when it takes something known and familiar and moves it in a new direction. To achieve this with additions made on an existing, unalterable platform (the basic instrumental tracks were live-mixed to two channels, and are, except for equalization, set in stone) is amazing.

The recording process is slow-going at this point, but putting the final touches on something like this always is.

We spent almost eight hours getting two more tracks ready for the final-mix-and-mastering stage. This gives us four out of ten tracks in that category.

My one reservation is that the process is not being done my way, which would involve replicating, as near as possible, our live performance. That is not J.'s vision, though, and as much as things are shared and democratic, i am Fool is his band, and he has shared what his goals for this project, and has been consistent from its beginning.

So, I'm good with it. I'm proud of what I've done, and with the work of my band-mates, and, as of yesterday's session, floored by the newest member.

Diet Comment
My weight loss continues for a third day since my post-birthday celebration high.

Normally, today would have been a cheat day. About a year-and-a-half ago, I pointed out that 'cheat day' wasn't the appropriate name for it, since I wasn't cheating, these anything-goes days were a planned and theoretically essential part of the weight loss diet; but I continued using the phrase anyway.

In the future, these days will be known as PHcHc days - Planned High-calorie, High-carbohydrate days. When I cheat, as in eating off-plan on the other six days a week, we'll call that what it is, and subtract a PHcHc day when it happens.

Simple, right?
