Thanksgiving has always been a wonderful holiday with a lot of meaning for me.

When I was younger, it was the biggest, best family holiday. It really had that Americana-nostalgia thing going.

I am glad I never lost that feeling. I am proud to have, as best I could, extended it - tried to cultivate it beyond the holiday. I practice thankfulness, gratitude, daily. When I have the opportunity to make any group I'm in feel closer, more like family, I take it.

I try and live my life where the good things that come my way aren't taken for granted. I try to let the people in my life know how grateful I am for their presence.

I believe my happiness is contingent on my attitude towards life, and I believe that being grateful is fundamental to an attitude that produces happiness. My current happiness began when I was grateful for what was going on with me when times were bad and I wasn't happy. Being grateful for the help I got from friends and family, for the net that caught me before I fell into the void, for the prospects and opportunities that allowed me to turn the corner and start over, grateful and happy, about eight years ago.

I have a lot to be thankful for, but I would be thankful with less, because gratitude is an emotion worth cultivating, no matter what.

Every day is for Thanksgiving, and I am grateful for that.

Diet Comment
I ate very well last Wednesday in New York City, including a feast in Chinatown where I tried some dishes - steamed soup dumplings and fried yellowtail - that were crazy good. Thanksgiving food was incredibly good, especially compared to travel stops at fast-food places on the way there, where the food was exactly as bad/good as I remembered, and as unhealthy. Friday was another travel day that featured a wonderful surprise in the small town of Denville, New Jersey, where, after a few days of low vegetable intake I chose Veggie Heaven over a Chinese restaurant during a gas stop. I had an incredible meal - as good as anything I ate in the wonderful, fancier restaurants in LA. Saturday and Sunday were passive, motionless, and food-filled, the quality of my home-prepped food helping me lose weight, the quantity working, to a degree, against that loss. I'm glad I gained as little as I did in the last four days, and I aim to be back down below 200 by Friday.
