I had an awesome night playing at the Elbow Room, and got to close the show with vocals.

There was a time, around forty-five years ago, when I was considered a good vocalist. That went by the wayside when I decided to play bass, and stopped singing, because singing and playing bass at the same time was too difficult - I hadn't gotten a toehold on the instrument, and was slowly working out my relationship with the bass.

Too bad - that was a bit of a mistake - no reason I couldn't stay in practice with both.

My range is now pretty limited, and I have to push the volume to hit some notes.

But, as in my bass playing, there are aspects to singing that have improved. One is arguably major, and validates my singing now: I have a much deeper connection to the material, and sing with more honesty.

It is also easier to sing and play bass now that I have an easier relationship to my bass playing.

Which makes singing fun, too. It puts me in a slightly different place than playing, because there's that slight tension coordinating the bass line and the vocal line, and any loss of focus creates a blip in the performance (even if I'm the only one who knows or cares), and  it is like a moving meditation - thoughts have to be ignored as the distractions they are.

I have to be in a 'still' place to make my noise.
