Quite a bit has gone on in the two weeks since my last comment.

I had a great Thanksgiving weekend with almost my whole family - Alex was missing, and I missed him a lot. It was great hanging with Joan and Andy and Denie, we had some great conversations - Denie, as an outsider, in the sense she didn't grow up with us, provided great counterpoint. That being said, she and Andy are looking a bit frail to me - their health problems, while no longer acute, have seriously slowed them down. Nonetheless, everything was pretty wonderful on all counts, as everybody was healthy enough to enjoy the food, camaraderie and love.

The day I got back from that trip was pretty eventful: I got a Typhus shot, a Scuba Gear gig, and a New Year's Eve gig with someone I"ve wanted to work with for quite a while. I finished out the day by meeting up with Tami and Brian of Scuba Gear at a gallery/opening, where I saw a bunch of friends I hadn't seen in a bit - it was nice catching up. But by the end of the night, I wasn't feeling all that well.

Next day, I felt worse, then better, then much worse. At the last minute, I canceled that night's I am Fool rehearsal, which was something I hated to do. I felt guilty and humiliated. Then I canceled the next day's rehearsal with Modern Mudd, and in conversation, agreeably gave up my spot as 'permanent sub' in that group. The new bass player is an acquaintance and I know everybody will be happy with that. I was fine with it as it happened, and have not second-guessed the choice since. There was going to be one gig in December, and two days before I'd gotten two gigs - so, all good!

I had a couple of more days of feeling crappy. I lost weight, down to my lowest weight of the year.

With the new gigs, it became obvious that I wouldn't be heading South in December, as I hAD previously planned/hoped for. But that just opened December up for more fun.

I played a gig with Scuba Gear last Friday: That was joyful. With a disappointingly small crowd (but a crowd nonetheless), we put on a show I enjoyed playing and believe was enjoyed by everybody who heard us. Then, after a Saturday spent recovering, on Sunday I got to go out to a monthly jam I've really come to look forward to. It is, of course, another music-based scene, but the players are almost entirely different - a group of Dead Heads, festival-goers, old school partiers. I fit right in with them, and they're a good match for me, as well. An entirely different group, and I couldn't be happier. Making it even more eventful, after my set, Tami and Brian joined me for a Scuba Gear set (with a couple of drummers subbing for MIA Josh, SG's regular drummer) and we killed it. I mean, hooting and hollering, and the bartender who does the hiring wants to talk about putting us in regular rotation, and even mentioning more money! That kind of killing it.

This set me up for the night's gig, beginning my rotation as the bass player at Rooters' Sunday night open jam, my original Syracuse jam, and it was a great night of music and friends. I ended up playing a gig's worth that night, all sorts of material and players. A kick-ass finish to the weekend.

My new computer (oh, along the way last week, I ordered a low-cost, high-value computer to take with me to Thailand) arrived Monday, and I've been getting that sorted out

Last night was (finally!) the multiply-postponed I am Fool rehearsal, and more joy. I love this band, and wish, as always, that we could just get together and play more. I'm so used to that, it has been a fact of the matter for so long, I need a better word than wish.

Bringing you all the way up to date, tonight I went out to the open mic at Shifty's, got to lead a set, appreciate some returning performers I hadn't seen in awhile, heard a couple of familiar performers in a new setting (with different backing), got to help out a struggling bass player (technical problem with his bass, so I leant him mine), and ended the evening with that wonderful feeling of being where I want, doing what I want, and being ever so grateful for it all.

Diet Comment
I ate a lot of food yesterday, and finished eating late, and, although nothing was off-plan, the amounts definitely were. Somehow, this unforeseen, tiny, inconsequential gain woke up something crazy in me, and, when presented with a box of Christmas cookies at band rehearsal, I went totally off the rails. Over the next couple of hours I ate the whole box. Even after I spilled out some of the cookies on the floor. I picked them up and ate them, too. Then, sugar-crashing on my drive home, I shortened my life by a few years, buying and eating fast food for the first time since I started this blog almost eight years ago.
