I jumped right back into my local music scene as soon as I got back from New Orleans.
Yesterday, I played at two open mics. The first, at the Colonial Inn in Cato, was hosted by Brian Modafferi of my band Modafferi (formerly known as Scuba Gear - this is relevant, see below). Not only did I get to have a 'rehearsal' with Modafferi (the whole band was there, and we played for over an hour), but I got to do a solo set.
From there, Brian and Tami (of I am Fool and Modafferi, and Brian's partner) joined me at the InsideOut Tavern. There I got to jam with a crazy guitarist, and I feel I acquitted myself well. Then I did some numbers with Tami and Brian. Finally, Frank Stepanek, fresh off his tour with Black Uhuru, dropped in, and we closed the night with a few different drummers.
We all hung out for a bit at the end of the jam, with Frank leading the conversation with an (as usual) hilarious rant that ended up being mainly centered on the dumbness of changing the band name from Scuba Gear ("...the best damn band name in the history of band names!") to Modafferi ("...no offense, but I just said it and I already can't remember it!"). Good fun and a shit-load of playing with a lot of different people. Kind of my dream night out.
Tonight, I went with Brian Modafferi to Auburn to check out a newly-opened club, and then to go to Moondog's Lounge to see the Honky Tonk Hindooz, a band I have enjoyed. The guitarist of the trio is a friend of mine, but all three band members are very good, long-time friends of Brian's.
At the first spot, I was greeted by a lot of familiar faces from Moondog's, as well as some friends who were members of the band playing there. The band sounded good, although I could only discern that by listening carefully, as their hired PA (I knew the sound guy) was much too big for the room, and the sound was muddy and both boomy and shrill. Well, I can listen through.
Moving on to Moondog's (a walk around the corner), the Hindooz were tearing it up. I love this band, they are unique. Jazzy guitar, accordian and upright bass versions of hits from a variety of genres, with a heavy dose of British invasion-era deep tracks.
An acquaintance of mine got called up to sing some songs near the end of the first set - up until then, I knew him only as a nice guy who loved music, but he has a really good voice, with a really good falsestto! That was an interesting revelation.
After the second set started, I got called up on stage to do a song. It was my first non-playing lead vocal since I was sixteen!
This is a video made of that appearance:
My life is so much fun!
I have a lot to be grateful for!
