I went to Shifty's tonight. Nothing unusual about that for a Wednesday. That's when Shifty's has their open mic, which I have been a regular at for almost ten years now.
Shifty's is a classic neighborhood bar, and it is appreciated by the neighborhood. It has live music four nights a week, plus an open mic Wednesdays. The audience is built in, so it is almost always full, and when a popular group is playing it can be packed and, no denying it, uncomfortable.
That rarely happens on open mic night, though.
The host band tonight (they change hosts every month) was Big D. That's for the lead singer and guitarist Dave, who used to weigh over four hundred pounds until he got surgery and lost over a hundred pounds.
Along with Dave is Rolland on bass and John on drums. This trio used to host the Wednesday night open mic at the (world-famous) Dinosaur BBQ, which is where I met them - it was the second open mic I attended in Syracuse.
So, we're all old friends. And we play together like it. Moreover, I got some good playing time, including a set where I backed up a singer-guitarist with John on drums, and I will not be surprised if that set isn't the highlight of my week.
The bartenders, Molly and Angie, know what I drink (and when).
I always see friends, tonight being no exception.
On a beautiful Summer night, you can hang out on the porch and talk.
Talking with friends, playing good music.
I'm all gratitude. This is the life I love.
