This is a bit of duality.
On the one hand, I like to tell stories. And, when I do, they are often brought on by some tangential thing happening in my proximity.
Meaning, I have to start my story at how I'm connecting to the matters at hand. Which in turn means that my stories often have preambles. Modern attention-spans don't like preambles. My slow delivery doesn't help.
Listeners become impatient.
I haven't learned to be concise. I haven't learned to speak in headlines.
What I've learned is to shut up when I have nothing relevant to say.
Which means there are some conversations I don't participate much in, along with the ones that include me going on and on...
But it also includes allowing myself to be interrupted. Stopping my conversation by not talking over the interrupter, letting the conversation die.
I can be quiet.
I really try not to interrupt others, myself.
It's a minor virtue.
Being loquacious sometimes, quiet others. It means understanding that people aren't as interested in me as I am, and that, similarly, people are always more interested in themselves.
I try to allow that, accept it, without judgment. Sometimes I fail.
I'm grateful for whatever insight is provided. I work on being a good listener.
