I labor not, these days. But I appreciate the sentiment.

I had a fantastic weekend playing, amongst a Summer-full of fantastic playing weekends.

Things just seemed to get better all Summer long. Now, entering the post-season, September has some gigs, including a month-long (well, almost) residency at the jam where it all started for me in Syracuse.

This past Sunday was the first, and it was a great success! I don't think I've ever had a better bunch of jams. No clunkers, nobody sucked, and I got a lot of playing time. It isn't the first time I've been the house bass, but last night was the best time I've had in that role.

I just feel like I'm making the best music now. My Friday sub gig with Chad Bradshaw was really good and pleasant. Then he and Buzz (drummer) showed up to do a set on Sunday, and that was superb. I saw a video of one of the songs from that set, and it was really good (unfortunately, not shareable). Then my Saturday gig with Modafferi was a complete triumph, in every way.

Like I said, Sunday was an off-the-hook great night.

At the end of September, I fly to LA to hang with Alex for two weeks, and when he isn't available (he has work), assorted other friends out there.

When I get back, though, there is virtually nothing at all on my gig schedule. Nothing in October, one gig booked in November, then nothing for the half of December before I leave town for the Winter. I think that will change a bit, but I don't expect it to change much.

That's my work report. It seems wrong to call it labor. Because, when I don't get to play for pay, I play for free. I am happy to get paid, but the music-making is what's important to me. I expect to do a lot of recording in my coming slack time, with both of my bands (i am Fool and Modafferi, if you're counting).

When there aren't gigs, or rehearsals, there are open mics and jam sessions. I'll be playing, still, pretty much as much as I want. But it's play, not work. And never labor.

I'm making the best of what's right now, and I'm ever so grateful for enjoying the present and being optimistic enough to have great plans going forward.

Diet Comment
This weekend's weight gain doesn't trouble me too much. A quarter-pound gain isn't much more than noise, for one thing, and I feel like I got away with some pretty eccentric and off-plan eating.
