I learned everything I knew about hippies from reading Time magazine. They did a sensational lifestyle issue on the phenomenon.
There was a 'history' that traced back to beatniks and the Berkeley Free Speech (sometimes known as the Free Sex) movement. There was a section that had ingenious ways to smoke pot, another section on the scandalous 'free love' (cautionary, complete with medical complications), and, of course, all the music.
While the lifestyle, and the philosophy were immediately attractive to me (how could they not be?), I never really considered myself a member - free love seemed unromantic and to a degree, threatening, and I was pretty materialistic. I couldn't let go of all my 'hangups' then (probably never did) and never considered myself a member of that group.
For one thing, I didn't like the idea of subsuming my ego in a group. I didn't like being easily labelled.
I was surprised, at the time, that other people saw me as a hippie, had some different ideas, or drew the line in a different place, about it than me.
At the time, it was, for me, all about the things I liked (sex, drugs, rock'n'roll, adventure, travel), and what I feared (sex, being perceived as un-cool, aging, corporations, competition, confinement, expectations).
Some things never change, but some do. I don't desire or fear the things I did back then. There's less of both, now. I had to work through a lot to get here, now.
Wait, that's wrong. It was more endurance (perseverance?) than work. I think there's a difference.

Don't seem to be able to kick the Quest bar habit (it's difficult when you have a half dozen boxes in four flavors hanging out). But look! It doesn't necessarily mean weight gain.

We are what we are, no matter how it is labelled, and no matter who or what does the labeling. We are only being human. Only being. Being.

Please explain " Alexander Darius Carroll " to me. i don't get th reference.
ReplyDeleteAlexander Darius Carroll was my pseudonym when I decided I would be a poet. I produced one epic poem (35 pages long, typed). Then pretty much never wrote poetry again. To me, this was the time when my 'hippie-ness' was at its zenith.
ReplyDeleteBefore birth, I'd decided my son or daughter would be named Alex, after this fictitious, short-lived (and awful) poet.
