Our party of six got a table right in front of the stage. I was in Heaven.
Until the music started. Then, one of my friends' wife started a conversation with the wife of another. The conversation's volume level was competitive with the musicians on stage. Once it started it never stopped, so that, when a song ended, they were left speaking really loud.
It would have been comical, I guess, but I was appalled. I tried, in a polite way, to tell them to cool it, but I couldn't get their attention, or make my feelings known. I asked the husband to help me bring drinks from the bar, and told him his wife was ruining the show for me, and others in the audience, who'd come to hear these classic musicians.
He replied, his wife hadn't wanted to come, and it was only the promise of spending time with my other friend's wife that had gotten her out, and he wasn't going to ruin their evening.
Like everybody else, I did my best to enjoy the music, and ignore the background noise.
I mention this story because I observed the same thing from the bandstand perspective at last night's gig.
The only difference was that the gig was in a bar-restaurant, where live music was not the focus. Still, I've never been happier to see my audience get up and leave as I was when the table in front of the band got up and walked out.
People have no idea how rude they are being in public situations like this. I find having to hear other people's cell phone conversations on the same level of inconsiderateness, and encounter that often. Some people have a clue, and when they are in public and their phone rings, they move somewhere that their conversation can remain somewhat private, but not often enough.
