What a ride this day was.
After getting some good sleep, I was up and out for my orthopedist appointment to discuss getting my new knees.
I was hoping for a schedule for getting them done, but two obstacles showed up. The first is that, lately, I haven't had too much knee pain, except on my longer walks, and then, it was manageable.
Secondly, insurance companies like to see knee replacement as a last resort, after cheaper therapies have been tried. So my doctor gave me a cortisone injection in one knee, and said, if it works, make an appointment for the other knee. Otherwise come back in three months and we'll talk about surgery.
All well and good, and, although disappointed that I wouldn't have new knees by my winter travels, somewhat optimistic that an acceptable plan would form for 2022.
I was looking forward to the re-opening of one of my favorite jams that night, too.

Then, about an hour-and-a-half after my shot, I felt a sharp pain in the injected knee. It intensified for about two hours, during which I could do little more than lie around and feel sorry for myself.
Then it subsided a little. I set out for the open mic.
What a wonderful party. Tons of friends I hadn't seen in a year-and-a-half. Big smiles all around. Lots of hugging. And I got to to play a bit.
I got bought drink after drink (without being asked), but I was limping from the pain in my knee, and couldn't stay the night to play again.
But I went home smiling.
Next morning (when I'm writing this), I was awoken by a call from the orthopedist. They apologized and told me nothing was wrong - increased pain, sometimes lasting for a few days, was very common. They hadn't realized this was my first cortisone shot, and thought I knew about it.

Now I do.
I'm grateful for my friends, my music the wonderful scene I'm part of, and for a nice bit of pain relief this morning.
