#2585, Thursday, January 14, '21: Spanish lessons

Daily Comment
Last week, I achieved a year-long streak of Duolingo Spanish lessons. Every day for a year (three hundred and seventy-one, as of today).

Learning a new language is one of the best exercises for the brain. It is recommended for third-agers like me to ward off senility, dementia, Alzheimers. (I also play Sudoku every day, and do crosswords).

But brain health isn't the reason I started learning Spanish. Originally, it was forward movement towards moving out of the country, where my destinations were 100% Spanish-speaking.

I am casual about my lessons. For one thing, I don't expect I can reach my (probably impossible) goal of fluency through Duolingo. It is a step on the way. For another, there will be no grade, something that ruined the Spanish classes I took in Junior and Senior High School (which I detested). 

My attitude is, put in the time, and what sticks, sticks. What doesn't will eventually be repeated until it does. As to that, I try to put in some time every day (which I have been successful with). And when I get to my Spanish-speaking destination, take one-on-one and group classes

I have no idea, now, if that will happen. The original, pre-pandemic, pre-open heart surgery plan had me moving to Cuenca last November. That didn't happen, and my move date is now very open-ended - I admit, I am increasingly unsure that my expatriation will ever happen.

Tomorrow, I'll talk about that.

I'm grateful for the place I'm at now, well into my recovery, with the end of pandemic restrictions in sight and an unknowable future that I feel happy to embrace

Diet Comment
I think I can credit this little gain to the macadamia nuts and parmesan crisps I ate in abundance last night.

Food Log
Breakfast
4:15pm: A LEO (lox, eggs and onions), avocado toast, and a salad (arugula, cabbage, chard, kale, spinach, walnuts, shaved parmesan, creamy balsamic dressing).

Lunch
Skipped. 

Dinner
8:40pm: Macadamia nuts, parmesan crisps and coleslaw.

Liquid Intake
   Espressos: 2;   Coffee: 0 oz.;  Water: 84+ oz.;
