Today I got a Medtronics LOOP recorder implanted in my chest. It is a battery powered device that records ECG data, analyzes it, and if it finds an abnormal pattern, broadcasts to a lab, which immediately makes two calls: To me, so I can make and transmit the actual recording (up until now, there's only the analysis), and then to the beautiful Dr. Hana Smith (my cardiologist, who performed the procedure, and who I have an unrequitable crush on). (I just made up the word unrequitable, but you get the idea).
The procedure was performed in an outpatient surgery center that is part of the hospital/medical group I am in (St. Joseph's, which I tell you because if you are ever in Syracuse and need anything medical done to your heart, I cannot recommend this hospital and associated physician's practices highly enough).
Literally everybody involved was cheerful and, while we had to wait about a half-hour for the Medtronics trainer to be ready, the actual procedure took less time than the betadine skin disinfectant to dry - literally, one minute from cut to bandage.

The entire thing, from registration to recovery and 'device training' took about two-and-a-quarter hours. There was a second of sharp pain, from the local anesthetic injection, and that was all. Once the implant site was numb, there was no pain involved at all.
Dr. Smith greeted me with a warm, "There's my boyfriend". She explained, accurately, as it turns out, everything that was going to happen. In response to a couple of questions, she told me that the implant should not inhibit me in any way, I was free to travel anywhere in the world. She canceled the prescription for the anti-atrial fibrillation medicine. And she gave me permission to drink alcohol, but not a lot. Still.
I drove myself to and from the thing. All good. No pain, no problems. I had stocked some of my favorite foods, knowing it would drive my weight up the next day, and at 5pm, I had my first shot of whiskey (Jameson's Premium Select 15-year) in almost six months.
I'm grateful for the luxury of excellent medical care i enjoy. I didn't really earn it, and I cannot take it for granted.
