Since I started at the VA, over three-and-a-half years ago, I haven't had too many bad days, and even the worst of them was better than the day I had today.
Today was supposed to be a kind of fun day at work. I had authorization to leave work at 10:30 in the morning, to go and play at the VA BHOC where Chad Bradshaw (Bradshaw Blues) works (he's a psychologist) for Veteran's Appreciation Day. A paid two-and-a-half hour break from real work to do what I love? How great is that?
But, for the first time since I took the job, today I thought about quitting. I should probably mention that fact in itself makes this the best job I've ever had. I worked for IBM for seventeen years and never went a month without thinking about quitting.
What made the day bad? Well, for one thing, I had to get up at five in the morning and do some (usually automated, but not this time) work.
That ruins my day right there, but when I was done, about an hour later, I didn't feel like quitting as much as I felt like just going back to sleep, which I kind of did, for an hour.
The rest? I'll just cut to the chase and say it was a combination of deadline pressure (the first time I've experienced this at the VA), and my own and other people's incompetencies.
One of the reasons this job has worked so well for me is an absence of pressure, and this day showed why.
I didn't quit, and I'll stay on the job until this becomes something I anticipate.
