My recent ordeal with new technology - in this case, combining my old PC with my new big-screen-flat-panel, gee-whiz-it's-smart-but-not-really TV - ended kind of well.
I was hoping to eliminate my PC desk and monitor, but instead, moved them into the living room next to the new TV. When I'm using the PC for work or my own writing (this blog!) I can sit at the desk, when I'm using it for entertainment, I can watch it on TV.
There you go. You have to be open to whatever solution actually solves the defined or higher priority problem.
I wasn't able to reduce the amount of stuff, but the new arrangement satisfies all other needs, and watching graphical things, movies, youTube stuff on the TV is pretty good.
And, although unnecessary, the wonderful Vizio customer service people sent a tech to my apartment to fix the dumb Smart TV feature that is unusable. Best experience I've had with any tech company except for Apple. Too bad the tech spent two hours looking at the problem, replacing the entire interface board, and ultimately came to the conclusion that it was Verizon's fault. Verizon, of course, says it's the TV.
I still haven't changed my thinking about digital. I still think it is counter-human, the bread-and-circuses of the 21st Century. Digital makes more music more available, but the music doesn't sound as good as analog. It enables me to write this blog, but puts just a smidgen of distance between me and my readers, and doesn't allow for real discussion - what a loss!
And on and on. Every advantage seems to have a corresponding disadvantage. Ultimately, I think the further you get from simple humanity, the worse. And that seems to be the upshot of digital devices.
Communicate better thanks to all the digital means? I don't think so. But they're so very attractive. But texting and messaging and even e-mails aren't the way humans communicate best. Mis-communication seems endemic to human nature, but in my experience, it is vastly enhanced by going through a digital interface.
And, don't get me started on all-the-time access. I mean just don't. It isn't a good thing.
That is all.

I wouldn't correspond with you nearly as much if not for technology
ReplyDeletei think technology has its uses. i think that in life, its not what you use, but the awareness and consciousness with which it is used. It seems true to me that you must accept the good with the bad, and all actions have both intended and unintended consequences. The only way we can negotiate the situation is to be aware of as much as we can and act as consciously as we can, always guided by conscience and compassion.

@Alex: You don't know that. Think about it: You haven't known anything different - you were an early adopter. People actually conversed and stayed in touch with each other before you were born. It was just different. IMO, it was better. It was also slower, and you think that that means you wouldn't be as connected, but there was no digital anything when I was your age, and 36 years later, any improvement in my interpersonal communications have nothing to do with technology. Also, I'm particularly talking about digital technology. As far as I'm concerned, the future of digital technology has been described by the Terminator movies.
ReplyDeleteThat being said, you also have to take into account lifestyle changes that have occurred because of technology. I would say that life hasn't improved much due to digital, but technology has. Hence, HAL 9000.
One of the things that I wrote but didn't get published was that I had problems with my tv, too and Samsung sent a guy who spent two days!!! getting it to work. It wasn't the smart tv feature but something about the on/off function that went wrong. Best service ever. he also switched out my modem.
