Here's the thing about motorcycles:

If your attention lapses for an instant, or that of a driver you are sharing the road with, you could get seriously hurt.

We get in our cars or on our bikes, and propel ourselves at speeds faster than a horse's gallop (only possible in the last 250 years, except for falling off a cliff). For some reason, we feel safe doing this. I know, I do. I'm crazy for that. That might be the virtue of the motorcycle. Its such a dangerous thing to do, that doing it spikes your adrenalin - every time. So, you know it is dangerous. You know that if you have an accident on one, you are going to be hurt and you're going to be hurt badly, or, at least worse than if you had a couple of tons of metal around you, or if you were moving at human speed.

I've known since I was seventeen that I was not going to be a motorcyclist. I learned to ride in one day, with a couple of friends. They were very impressed with how quickly I took to it. Then, I had a little spill. No injuries to me or the bike.

But I was done with motorcycle riding. I still don't know exactly why I went down. Which is the point.

We can't, and probably shouldn't, eliminate all the danger in our lives. But we can avoid danger for the thrill of it, because inviting danger into our lives is counter-survival.

In a 'safe' (at least, non-malevolent) Universe, what danger there is is what we create. And we've created quite enough danger; no need to create more.

The thing about pepperoni is that it is salty. Eating it right before going to bed is going to cause a bit of water retention.

  1. You're absolutely right! So please don't call me while you are driving. i will not talk to you then. Also, not related to danger, please don't call me ever, when you can't give the conversation your undivided attention.

    1. If it rely on a state of non-distraction, we might never speak again... But, I get it. No calling from the car, or when I'm otherwise doing something else...

  2. Ken, I personally agree with your comments about motorcycles, though there are obviously many of a different mindset who are quite willing to take the risk. And speaking of that impetuous age of seventeen, that's when I bought my one and only motorcycle. I owned it for 2-1/2 months and put 2,500 miles on it, all on the streets, as it was a 50cc bike with a maximum speed of about 40 mph. Thankfully, I never had a spill, though came close once when I skidded on some sand in the road. I have lots of good memories of that brief period, but when I sold it I knew I'd never buy another. --Dan R.

    1. The problem with teen notions and ideals is that the part of the brain that deals with consequences is not functional - it is still developing through the mid-twenties; we literally don't know what we're doing and don't have the mental tools to evaluate the risks or consequences. All we feel is the thrill. It's an exciting way to live (I'm thinking Wile E. Coyote excitement). The things I did as a teen mostly lost their appeal over time and I stopped doing them decades ago. Only the very few that I judged, as an adult, to fall on the right side of the risk-reward ratio (music, sex and pot) still remain elements of my adult life.
