I am not immune to the social training that encourages mixed feelings, including guilt and self-identification in the mix with sympathy, empathy and compassion.
I think of all the feelings - very mixed for me, right now, when I have people I am very close to and regularly involved with, in real pain, dealing with complex and long-term medical issues - the only useful one is compassion.
My other feelings are confused and confusing, and their source probably isn't the place where compassion comes from, but from past experiences when I learned a less-than-natural response to situations that only really demanded a genuinely compassionate response.
Luckily, I have other training that allows me to express compassion, and so, allows me to be present with my friends undergoing difficulties, in a way that is meaningful and positive.
That is separate from me falling back into old patterns of guilt and fear in the face of other people's problems - that is something to be dealt with on an ongoing basis, and I am doing that.

A day's worth of food plus a day's worth of Quest bars - oh, the immoderation. Not to mention the double helping of Jameson's. Maybe helping is the wrong word, but I was feeling good after playing a few sets, and drinking for free...Diet Comment
