Part of her argument against this is that we have sick American homeless children to take care of first.
The other is that we should turn them back over to the Mexican government, and let them take care of (their) problem, not us.
The comments were nauseating. The ones that had no sympathy for her position, and the ones defending her position. The comment thread was quickly dominated by two of her friends, one actually did call the other a racist, bigoted, ignorant idiot, and the other responded by calling him a communist (small-C) who hates his own race. And someone actually said, if you don't like it here, and aren't patriotic about this country, get out.
Almost fifty years after I first heard it, I am still hearing, "Love it or leave it!" rhetoric.
I came this close to responding, "Yup, you're all fucked, this country is fucked, and I, for one, am leaving."
Instead, I posted: "Parents don't want the kids? Kill them. Problem solved."
And she wrote back, "I hope you're joking, but that isn't funny."
I just used my option to never display that conversation again.
Hundreds of years of "if you're not a slave" restrictive immigration policy, where you had to endure decades of discrimination if you didn't arrive on these shores wealthy, imposed by "Nativist" sentiments (with no irony felt over European's (and their descendents') atrocious treatment of actual Natives) have brought us to this point. Unenforceable and inhumane rules seeking to 'protect' our borders from being 'violated' by "illegal" entrants.
Nobody worries about our Northern border (European descendents dominate Canada), only the brown people coming in from the South.
The awesome thing is, it is all unnecessary. There is plenty of money to take care of all the impoverished and unloved people in the US no matter where they come from. It is just that the people (and corporations) who have all the money don't want to spend it on that.
Short-sighted, much?

Yesterday's meals - consisting of Chinese food and Quest bars - continues the weight loss. It will, however, be the last day like that, at least for a while. I am running out of Quest bars (finally!). Of course, nothing is permanent.Diet Comment
