I continue to be amazed at how much I have to be grateful for. I hesitate to go all new-agey and/or Pollyanna about how things work out for me.

I wonder some times whether I am so happy because of the many fortunate, affirming things that occur all the time, or whether those things happen to me because I am so happy. We're deep in happy-chicken, happy-egg territory here.

Where, previously, my gig calendar with my two bands, I am Fool and Modafferi was looking sparse a few weeks ago, there's been a lot of fill-in recently, with a half-dozen gigs added in the last two weeks, thanks to excellent performances by both bands.

Of course, gigs don't dictate my playing schedule, I play between four and six times a week (when I'm in town, of course), with or without paying gigs. Rehearsals and open mics are quite enough to keep me playing and keep me happy.

I have, however, been getting some indications of the beginning of the end of that. Which is fine, I had no expectation that my time as a playing member of Syracuse's music scene was unlimited.

But that revives my interest (well, it has increased the time I spend thinking about it, anyway) in living as an expat.

Which has led to checking airfares to the cities on my retirement list.

Which led to me booking a flight to Lisbon in December (the 12th, to be specific).

That's hundreds of dollars less than the cost to fly to any of my other top-five (Chiang Mai, Medellin, Cuenca, Montevideo). Very excited about Lisbon - it only recently got on my list. I'm thinking about going back to Chiang Mai, too.

Anyway, after gigging last Thursday, Friday and Saturday, I had an excellent weekend away from home, first at a party of my old grade-school friends from Clearview, Queens in New Paltz, then in New York City, with visits to lots more friends and also my brother, Andy, and sister, Denie.

And over-indulging in fabulous, off-plan food the whole time.

Now I'm home, and fondly remembering everything I did, and also back on plan as far as eating. Feeling good about it all.

It's all about being grateful. It seems when you practice gratitude, more things to be grateful for come your way.

Maybe I was wrong about the weight coming off more slowly than I packed it on. The twenty-four hour fast I did yesterday instantly took off half of the weight I put on in five days. I'll be good today, and then I will be good on the weekend. I hope.
