More good musical news.

Modern Mudd has been auditioning new drummers to replace my fallen friend Art, the band's drummer who dropped dead last month.

Until today, all the drummers have been acceptable to me (I don't really have much say about who the band ultimately picks), but today's drummer wasn't. I don't know whether he was a good or bad drummer, but over the course of playing ten songs, we never synched up. Maybe he felt it was my job to 'get with' him, but I couldn't. We never grooved.

Later, I found out that good friend and rhythm partner Dan, who auditioned last week, had been selected, and I couldn't be happier.

I found out this news at a special open mic, as the town's most successful young drummer had a 'going away' party at one of my regular open mics (he's moving to Nashville). The turnout was stellar, as he'd worked, mostly in the blues genre, with almost every local heavy-hitter.

I had met him, and played with him, around eight years ago. He was still in high school then. His father drove him out to a Sunday afternoon open mic I went to. He was a little green, but very good for all that, especially considering his age. He went on to study music, performance and, of course, percussion at the Conservatory of Pace University. About five years after I met, he was running the open mic where I'd met him.

It was a great time, and I'm glad to have had a chance to play with him one last time. It was also fun reminiscing with his father and my friend John Brown, who nicknamed him 'Kid Leone' (it stuck) at that very first open mic. (Aside: Johnny is also the guy who nicknamed me 'Reverend Ken').

The night ran long. I was supposed to play again, but didn't get that chance. Still, I went home smiling.
