My thoughts have been turning to travel.
I have booked one long trip (working definition: more than 5 days) this year: Eleven days in LA in October. There's a possibility of another trip to Florida in November, but if it happens, it will be a last-minute decision.
I also expect to travel down to the City a couple of times - quick hits, one to three days. Maybe a long weekend in Vermont when I get back from LA.
That's it for 2017. Recently, I've been thinking a lot about travel in 2018.
There are two reasons for this: First, Winter is approaching. Last year, I spent a good portion of the Winter in Florida, and, to a lesser degree, North Carolina, and it was just great!
Secondly, my friend Jerry found out airfares to SouthEast Asia were incredibly cheap and began talking about a three-week trip to Thailand. That got me thinking, and looking at the fares. My first thought was to take advantage of the opportunity to travel with a friend. But our motivation and travel goals are different. He's going primarily as a sex tourist (not that there's anything wrong with that, but it isn't my focus). He wants to spend time in Bangkok. I don't - I want to go to Chiang Mai, the destination that has spent more time at the top of my list of retirement destinations than any other place in the last twenty-five years.
I am seeing airfares out of JFK for a little more than five hundred bucks to Chiang Mai.
I've also been talking my friend Kokomo Slim, down in NOLA. He's invited me to parade with his krewe for Mardi Gras in February. I'm thinking I might make that a long road-trip, Syracuse-North Carolina-Florida-NOLA, and back the same way. That takes care of most of February, right there.
I smile when I think of these things. You think about the future in the present - it's a rewarding activity in itself. What a life! Nothing but gratitude for my good fortune.
