The big news of the weekend is that everybody I know in the path of Hurricane Irma is safe. I'm relieved. Friends were in danger, but they've all come through intact, mostly with surprisingly little property damage, as well. Instead of worrying (about something I could do nothing about), I visualized this outcome.
Saturday was the weirdest day... It was the annual Fool Fest (nobody calls it that. Its official name is Festival In the Park). In the past, this has meant a really, really long day. This year, we cut our ties with the race event and went with the Town of Minoa Fire Fighters, which meant a later start and an earlier finish - a six-hour schedule rather than ten hours.
My two bands, Scuba Gear and i am Fool closed our part of the festival (there were supposed to be fireworks, but they decided to do a bonfire (nice) first, then the country band part of the Firefighters fest, then the fireworks.
Scuba Gear's set went well, despite the musical 'clams' on my part. I have been trying to learn the material and it is coming very slow, because I have no tracks to listen to. Luckily, I am adapt at covering my mistakes (clams). The mistakes tend to be wrong notes, but they're played in the right place, so are easy to ignore. Usually I'm the only one who knows I've screwed up.
But the set with i am Fool was another story. There were a few songs where things just came off the rails - groove lost, arrangement blown, wrong chords. I don't know how much it showed to the audience, but on stage it was pretty nightmarish. I let these things go and forgive myself (once it's done, what can you do?), but I'm not sure how the other band members are dealing with what, subjectively, was one of our worst performances.
Because I'm so good at letting things go, I managed to have a really good time all day.
The opportunity for redemption is always available at the next gig, which was Sunday night, where I was house bass at the Rooters open jam. Here, a slow start gave the house band some relaxed warmup time, and as we gained audience and musicians for jamming, things got going and ended up very, very well, in my opinion.
Tonight's Scuba Gear rehearsal was canceled, so after spending the day at chores, I could just relax, go to bed early (before 1am).
What a life! Nothing but gratitude for my good fortune - and those.
