Two weeks ago, at an open mic I attend only occasionally, the host, while introducing my set, said I should do a sixties music show. I told her that could be fun.
The open mic takes place every week, at Kellish Hill Farm, and Kathy Kellish is the operator, and hosts all events. It is a working farm, but has a live music business on the side, and calls itself "where the music lives".
During the winter, the open mic is held in a lodge; in warmer weather it is held in a barn outfitted with a stage, which is also used for concerts. There is also an outdoor stage in an 'amphitheater' - a sloping hillside - used for concerts in the summer.
Last night I went back to the open mic. and Kathy apologized to me for "putting me on the spot" like that. I told her I hadn't felt that way; in fact, I thought it was a great idea, and as we were coming up on the fiftieth anniversary of the 'Summer of Love' I would be happy to do it.
We went to the back room and she pulled out a calendar. We picked a date. We talked about times for the show.
This morning, I got a message from Kathy, she'd made a Facebook event: Reverend Ken presents the Summer of Love Fest.
I posted a call for performers on Facebook. The response was quick, and in a few hours there were only four of fourteen spots left in the schedule. My band quickly agreed to support me with a set - we have about a half-dozen 'qualifying' songs, including a couple of Beatles tunes, and we'll play four - one more than any other performer (including myself - three songs each).
It's exciting - I've never done anything like this before. And the only things I've ever planned this far in advance have been some vacations - but those involved only me, or at the most, two other people. This looks like it will involve more than two dozen, and really, many more.
People's enthusiasm leads me to suspect this should be a fun time. I can't wait, but being it's in August, almost four months out, I will have to.
I'm so grateful for this opportunity.
