Forty-to-forty-five years ago, playing bass with a Soul review, I spent a lot of time in small bars in predominantly black neighborhoods.

Last night I 'went home', playing bass at an open mic in a black neighborhood in Syracuse.

What a breath of fresh air! And what a unique experience - in the past, all the time I spent in places like that I was gigging, there were never any open mics or jam sessions other than for jazz players.

The warmth and enthusiasm of the other musicians and audience, and hearing many old and new soul songs and instrumentals, really warmed my soul. It was great. I got a warm reception for my playing. I felt like an instantly embraced new resident of the neighborhood.

I am so grateful to have been invited, so grateful to have been invited to rediscover this kind of scene (and to have lived long enough and be healthy enough to enjoy it).
