I had a fun night of playing, and even had a companion player - very rare for me these days.
It gave me a chance to talk about myself to someone who knew almost nothing about me, and had disclosed almost nothing about themselves to me.
Does everyone like to talk about themselves? I don't think so. Sometimes people feel vulnerable, and don't want to open up about themselves. Sometimes it's an issue of trust. Many people find it easier to talk to complete strangers that those close to them - a complete stranger's reaction or response to your story can do little harm, rather than suffer rejection from someone they value.
I have a policy - I show interest in people, but don't probe - I let them tell me what they want, when they want. There have been times when I didn't, but they are in the past. I like talking about my past - I have lived an interesting life - but I don't volunteer much about myself un-asked or without a current context.
And I also know that my memory of my past is not completely factual - every subjective memory changes a little bit when recalled, I think. I have a lot of anecdotal support for this, gathered from listening to people talk about past scenes I was a part of, and finding my memory of the event at odds with theirs.
I have also remembered things differently from what documentation shows as the facts - who played at a concert, or when something happened. And, I suspect that some of my vivid memories are merely fantasies I'm remembering as if they had happened.
So, I go with what I remember, with an appreciation that my memories may be not be objectively true, but they are my story, fact or fiction.
And that's okay.
