I have learned and now performed Leonard Cohen's song First We Take Manhattan which I first heard on Jennifer Warnes' fabulous CD, Famous Blue Raincoat (Songs of Leonard Cohen).
I haven't played that CD in more than a decade, now, but there was a time it was in constant rotation. It was the first good-sounding CD I ever heard (when they first came out, I thought CDs sounded vastly inferior to LPs. I was right, they did, although better playback and recording technology improved their sound considerably, they still don't sound as good).
This is my favorite album of Leonard Cohen's songs. Warnes was his backup singer for decades. She had a couple of hit songs on her own, and has a classically beautiful voice. But this album's superior production and arrangements really made it/make it stand out. Leonard Cohen wrote some songs just for the album, sings a little backup, and does a duet with Warnes on one cut (he sings the Fire, she sings Joan on Joan of Arc, a masterpiece).
I finally got around to re-listening to the album - whew! it still sounds great, it still moves me with every listen. Among other things, I'd forgotten the stellar cast of musicians involved. It's just an all around.
I put a youTube version on Facebook today, along with some thoughts, similar to the above. Just want people to listen.
I am very grateful to have had the experience of the CD, and to be able to share it.
