Monday nights I jam with a couple of guys I met recently.
I want to not do it, because the music doesn't really sound good to me. It is difficult for me, because I think they're both musical and they are definitely both good guys and friends. The problem is that they aren't playing near my level. It isn't a matter of talent, it's a matter of how developed their playing is.
I'll keep going, though, for a couple of reasons:
The first is that, as I said, there is the potential for the music to improve and become better and more satisfying (to me), and, since as an ensemble of musicians with diverse tastes and backgrounds, there is also the possibility of creating something new and refreshing. I don't think they are untalented, and I know that playing with someone with decades more experience in music will make them better musicians - that is the primary way I developed as a musician. They have chosen me, and I feel somewhat obligated to give back in that way.
The bigger reason? I can't come up with a good reason to not continue on with them that will not be hurtful to them. It is hard to justify causing them that pain when there is really no cost or inconvenience involved in sparing them that.
So, it will continue, and I am grateful for the multitude of opportunities in so many areas of my life that this little jam affords me.
