Here is something I didn't expect: As I get closer to leaving the workforce, with only fifty calendar and thirty-three workdays to go, I am getting more and more frustrated with work.
I'd like to think it's because work has been very busy lately, with some tricky, attention-demanding tasks and problems to solve. That is surely a factor.
But I think it is actually my after-work schedule that is really driving my workday discontent. I've been playing between four and six gigs a week since October, even with taking two whole days off for Thanksgiving (I worked the day before, and the Saturday after).
I get to work late, still tired. Sleep lost cannot really be made up. Last night is one of the few nights I did not play, and even then, up to the last minute I could leave to get to the open mic at a reasonable time, I was going. Tiredness finally won out, and I did my first shift of sleep from ten o'clock until four-thirty. It took me quite a while to fall back asleep in my bed.
I got to work even later than usual. More refreshed than usual, but in my rush, I put my hearing aids in a pocket. At work, when I put them in, there was only one. I went home at lunch and couldn't find the other. I checked in the car, I checked at work, too.
That's a fifteen-hundred dollar hit if it doesn't turn up. There's no such thing as insurance against loss.
And that may be responsible for my feelings of the moment - there's a lot of self-recrimination going on here. But what is the cause of my post-sleep error?
Carelessness caused by rushing caused by being late for work due to sleeping late due to over-tiredness.
Sigh. It isn't a catastrophe, at least now. If I can't find the missing hearing-aid, I have savings to cover, but those savings are meant for something other than covering my lifestyle errors.
So it goes.
Postscript: An hour-and-a-half or so after I finished writing this (at work), I left for the day and went home. As I put my key in the door, I happened to look down at my straw doormat. There, in the corner, almost invisible, was my hearing aid. I continue to be the luckiest person I know: I seem to get away with everything these days. Except lack of sleep. Soon, if I survive the next fifty days, that problem will end up in the rear-view mirror, too. That's the benefit of retirement to me.

I think yesterday's aberrant weight gain was due to the salt in the nuts. Not there today, I'm happy to say.Diet Comment
