Unwanted advice. I don't like it, and I've tried to be aware enough not to offer it. It never gets a good reaction.

Then there are all the examples in my life of people proselytizing, evangelizing, propagandizing - all hard-sell to get you to buy something - or buy into something - that someone else thinks will somehow, enrich them.

I try to keep an open mind, but when someone tells me, without having been asked first, to think a particular way, act in a particular way, or buy something, my bullshit alarm goes off. All hard-sell tactics use negative emotions like fear or greed or whatever, either singly or, often, in combination, to persuade you. Your reward is the removal of fear or envy, and it never happens.

There is little need to give any salesman, whether they are hawking a blender or a philosophy, the benefit of the doubt.

If there is a benefit to you, you will find out about it in a way other than advertisement. Advertising sees you only as a potential revenue source. No advertisement is completely altruistic.

I believe in asking for help when I want it. I am not shy about that. But helping me when unasked, may not be helping me at all. Better to ask, which is what I do now, "Can I help?" So simple.

It feels good when I ask someone if I can help them, without any expectation of what form that help may take to be useful. When I skip this step, which, believe me, happens more than I wish it did, the best I can hope for is that what I'm doing matches the intention - to help - but that is rare, in my personal experience.

And when that is not the case, then the best I can hope for is a polite, "That isn't helping."

The worst case, of course, is a form of injury.
