The fun of the jam was in full force at Shifty's tonight.
After leading a short set, I got to back up a new guitarist-singer, from (slightly) out of town, on his first night at Shifty's open mic.
He played well, choosing some fairly familiar songs, rocking out. The house guitarist and drummer (who played on my set, too) are stellar musicians, and we gave him great backup, and, for once, I had a chance to stretch out a little.
I got a kick out of that - in the zone as I was - and really enjoyed myself.
Later, I connected with a good drummer I had played with, and backed up the singer/guitarist and lead guitarist from The Token Few, a band I may play bass with regularly, on a long jammy set, which also turned out pretty well. There was a song in there that apparently broke the drummer, and the rhythm section was a little less than together - briefly. But you move right along. I found some good grooves, and the few moments that didn't click gave way to better stuff.
Then I let a friend play my bass on a set, so I got to hear approximately how it sounded 'in the house' (approximately, since a lot of the sound comes in the right (plucking) hand, which wasn't mine, obviously) and I was very pleased.
The house bass player (another friend, of course), was very flattering, and all around, I had a great night, and celebrated with an ice cream treat (that's what drinking will do, I guess).
All around, a night to be grateful for.
