Despite my nagging back pain, I had a kick-ass night of jamming last night.
This probably bores my readership to tears, since A) It is not unique, and 2) you weren't there.
What can I say? Syracuse is remote. I didn't realize how remote until I moved here. It didn't occur to me that of all the places in New York state I'd visited in my life, I had never spent one minute in Syracuse before moving here. Why? Syracuse is a crossroads you drive past going to (or coming from) Canada or Boston or Albany on your way somewhere South or West.
You view it out the car window from I-90 and/or I-81. Then you're past it.
In the six years I've been here, I've had only six non-local visitors (on three different occasions). Four were going to/coming from Buffalo.
So it goes. I can't help the geography. All I can do is be the one who makes the trips to visit, because Syracuse just isn't a destination.
Originally, I was hoping to come down to the City after my New Year's Eve gig, to see friends but mainly to visit my brother on his birthday. That didn't work out due to the above-mentioned back pain. Making two five-hour drives over three days was not in the cards. I spent the time in bed. I binge-watched a few TV series from last year, napping frequently, instead.
Until last night, when I gingerly got my lightest bass out and did my first playing of the New Year (the fifteen minutes of post-NYE playing doesn't count). I tried standing and playing, that lasted two minutes, then I stopped in the middle of a song to get a bar stool to sit on.
And it was good. And long. I was only at my first stop for five minutes when I was called up to play. I then played for almost an hour-and-a-half! At my next destination, I played for another hour.
I'm none the worse for wear, and the playing was good. I don't seem to have aggravated my back any.
Now I have a busy playing schedule ahead of me for the next four weeks. I am going to have to be very careful if I'm going to meet all my obligations. I'm really hoping for the healing power of music...
