The primary attributes of anchors are weight and hooks, both entirely functional. When the anchor is not in use, both these attributes become liabilities - the anchor takes up space and adds weight, both are dysfunctional.
There are times and places where we want to stay in one place, and we drop anchor to avoid movement. There we are, until we weigh anchor and move to the next stopping place. When we're on the move, the anchor is just something that slows us down while taking up deck space.
An anchor in use attaches something floating to something not. It tethers.
All the things that keep me in one place are anchors: They are attachments of one kind or another.
When I find a place that seems to be a good place to hang out, I drop anchor, and get attached. That need not be (maybe, can't be) a physical place. It can be an emotional space.
Whichever, to move on, I have to weigh anchor. The attachment to places or things that are not present in the here and now weigh me down, and I have to watch my step not to trip over the spiky parts of that attachment (faulty memory - only the good parts - and unrealistic expectations).
I hope the first step is awareness, because I'm not quite ready to haul that anchor up right here, right now.

Gurjieff, as represented by P.D. Ouspensky in the book, In Search Of The Miraculous " says:
ReplyDelete"You often think in a very naive way. You already think you can do. To get rid of this conviction is more difficult than anything else for a man ( or woman - a.r.k.). You do not understand all the complexity of your organization and you do not realize that every effort, in addition to the results desired, even of it gives these, gives thousands of unexpected and often undesirable results, and the chief thing that you forget is that you are not beginning from the beginning, with a nice clean, new machine. There stand behind you many years of a wrong and stupid life, of indulgence in every kind of weakness, of shutting your eyes to your own errors, of striving to avoid all unpleasant truths, of constant lying to yourselves, of self justification, of blaming others, and son, and so on. All this cannot help affecting the machine. The machine is dirty, in places it is rusty, and in some places artificial appliances have been formed, the necessity for which has been created by its own wrong way of working."
" These artificial appliances will now interfere very much with all your good intentions. "
" They are called 'buffers'.
"... Buffers are created slowly and gradually. Very many "buffers' are created artificially through "education' Others are created under the hypnotic influence of all surrounding life ".
i think that these "buffers' are the same as your observation of what you've named "anchors'. i agree that the first step is awareness. What else? And the only "step" is awareness. All else falls into place behind that quite naturally.
Light - Love - Compassion -
Imagine that: Gurdjieff, you and I all agree!
