There isn't much you can do when adults misbehave.

Except try to understand, and make a note on where their presumably good intentions went wrong.

For me, in many cases, time has to pass before I see a bigger, more illuminating picture.

Tonight, I went to an in-home jam session that went seriously, artistically wrong.

Hosted by an accomplished musician, whose intentions were very good, but whose way of conducting the whole affair was seriously lacking.

He talks. And talks more. He talks about whatever he wants to talk about, whether or not it is appropriate (such as talking about friends and family members that nobody else knows), and doesn't listen. Which means, at some point, you have to ignore him and proceed to playing even though he is still talking.

In three hours, the collective group managed to play 7 songs. And not long songs, either.

And then there was another difficulty - he cuts other people musically short, plays over other people.

At one point, I started playing and singing a song. When he recognized it, he started playing and singing it - from the beginning, as though what I was doing was my way of suggesting a song for him to sing.

Not cool, dude.

I strongly suspect a good portion of his behavior is due to medical issues - he exhibits all the symptoms of extreme ADHD, and additionally, probably has residence somewhere on the autism spectrum.

I see a lot of that. I don't want to attribute it all to a lack of social skills, consideration, or just plain egomania, but I see a lot of people acting out, not realizing how their behavior affects other people, or seemingly aware of what they're doing.

When I see it, I disengage, and so it was tonight. I quickly packed up and left after multiple episodes of behavior I perceived as rude.

  1. Why are you judging this guy? What do you know about his world? Who doesn't manifest her/his motivations and expectations, different as they can be from everyone else?
Everyone alive has some form of ADHD and Autism These are made-up names assigned to arbitrary divisions of the whole into that which we can measure and name to pretend that we understand them.
