More car problems. More money flushed down the toilet on a car I don't feel good about driving.
I have made some purchasing decisions I regret. I have basses that I wish I hadn't bought, and at least one guitar and amp more than I need. I have kitchen appliances, pots and pans I don't use. I have bought computers I grew out of too quickly, and an iPad I have found little use for, a complete waste of money. Of course, I have made lots of bad decisions with investment of money and time.
But of all the things I regret spending money on, a crappy car tops my list. I started driving in 1966 - I paid for driver's ed for myself. My first car was a Volvo PV544, bought in 1967. I have owned a dozen cars since then, and the Kia Soul is my least favorite.
And, I think, when you count the cost of repairs in the last couple of years, the most expensive to own on a total cost divided by years of ownership. The car I paid the most for, my beloved 2001 Honda Odyssey, lasted more than twelve years, and needed very few repairs in that time. I've had the Kia for six years as of this month.
I've had buyer's remorse since day one. That's what happens when you set your sights on something for reasons that have nothing to do with its function in your life.
I bought the car because I liked its looks and I liked its name. I know. I can be stupid.
The car disappointed in comfort, cargo capacity (a big surprise - it looks like it should hold more stuff than it does), fuel economy and ride quality.
On top of which, it has been the least reliable car I've ever owned. I bought it one year old with 18,000 miles on it, for $14,000. I have put about $7,000 into repair (beyond maintenance). Over $4500 in the last three months!
So it goes.
I make mistakes. I learn from them. I hope the car will last for another 45 weeks of driving (over the next 13 months), at which point I will stop owning a car. I would like it to be the last car I own. If it isn't, it will really be my worst investment ever.
And, you know what? If it is my worst-ever investment, I'll be grateful for that.
