My gig last Friday went well.
Saturday morning, I was nervous about the memorial for Gary Shaw where I would deliver the eulogy. That nervousness combined with grief was bringing tears to me.
In fact, I was upset enough, on the four-hour drive down, to have to stop several times, in tears. At one point, I called my sister Joan to calm me down. That was a good move.
Once I got to the funeral home, though, my emotions were simpler, and concentrated on my love for Gary and his family.
The weather cooperated - warm and mostly sunny. The service took place behind the funeral home, on a lawn which overlooked the Hudson River.
I spent some time with Gary's widow and his daughters, and then, fully prepared with the eulogy on my iPad, I delivered it, choking up but not breaking down several times.
Unusually for me, I drove home in silence. I was emotionally drained.
I was wired from the road, though, and instead of going straight home, I stopped off at Valley Blues House, where the band (all friends of mine) were loading out. There were a few other friends hanging out.
I toasted Gary again, with my friends, told some stories, made the fifteen-minute drive home, it was after one-thirty in the morning. I couldn't sleep, as tired as I was. I guess I still had some emotions roiling around, after all. I finally fell asleep around 6am.
I woke up in the afternoon, and went out to play at Dinosaur BBQ's outdoor stage.
I went home for dinner, then went to play at the Valley Blues House.
I'm grateful for what Gary brought to my life, grateful for my musician friends, grateful for my life.
