I don't fear death, at least not my own. I don't court dying - in fact, I think if you embrace life in the way I do (at this point - now - my attitude and behavior having changed/evolved over time), death seems like part of it.

Not something I think a lot about or dwell on.

Somebody else's death, however doesn't touch me the same way. The grief of those near who survive, and the inevitable hardship incurred by those closest saddens me.

But worst of all is when someone's death is pronounced while they are still alive, as in someone given a terminal diagnosis.

I've lived through that once, when first wife/ex-wife Nell was given the news that her cancer wasn't responding to medication, surgery or radiation. The remaining months of her life were... words fail, either being too melodramatic or understated.

I just learned that Marsha, wife of i am Fool guitarist Mike Sweeney, has received just such a death sentence - tomorrow she will come home from the hospital to die at home - hospice care. How long? That, nobody knows. Nell lived for almost three months after she was given a week's time. It is sad - a terrible thing, to watch someone you love die. Marsha was a friend. We weren't close, but we were friends. I will miss her.

My hope is, my only thought, really, is that I can be of some service, or comfort, in some way to Marsha, and to Mike and Hailey (their daughter). I am, selfishly, grateful that death has taken so few from me over the years, with the knowledge that eventually, it takes all.

The idea I've expressed here before, that while I don't have the resources to do everything I want to do, but I do not need to do anything I don't want to do, is serving me well, most of the time.

At least, unless you think that avoiding things I should do that I don't want to, like housework and reducing my possessions, turns out to be a problem.

I figure, should is not a motivating force for me. 'Should' does not equal 'Need'. When these things need doing (or when small steps are required - I don't fall behind on doing the dishes or washing my clothes), I do them, because I want to, and don't mind.

Housework and sorting and tossing possessions, until there is a need, I'm living like a newly-minted bachelor boy. One who's a lazy slob by inclination, if not nature.

So it goes..

My brother sent me a science article about studies that show living gratefully has physical, emotional and social benefits. I've felt this for some time, and my living a life of expressed gratitude has been a wonderful thing - and there's no chicken-and-egg question about it: I was grateful before I decided to be happy.

I am grateful I made that choice, and grateful to be here to tell about it.

Two weeks ago, at an open mic I attend only occasionally, the host, while introducing my set, said I should do a sixties music show. I told her that could be fun.

The open mic takes place every week, at Kellish Hill Farm, and Kathy Kellish is the operator, and hosts all events. It is a working farm, but has a live music business on the side, and calls itself "where the music lives".

During the winter, the open mic is held in a lodge; in warmer weather it is held in a barn outfitted with a stage, which is also used for concerts. There is also an outdoor stage in an 'amphitheater' - a sloping hillside - used for concerts in the summer.

Last night I went back to the open mic. and Kathy apologized to me for "putting me on the spot" like that. I told her I hadn't felt that way; in fact, I thought it was a great idea, and as we were coming up on the fiftieth anniversary of the 'Summer of Love' I would be happy to do it.

We went to the back room and she pulled out a calendar. We picked a date. We talked about times for the show.

This morning, I got a message from Kathy, she'd made a Facebook event: Reverend Ken presents the Summer of Love Fest.

I posted a call for performers on Facebook. The response was quick, and in a few hours there were only four of fourteen spots left in the schedule. My band quickly agreed to support me with a set - we have about a half-dozen 'qualifying' songs, including a couple of Beatles tunes, and we'll play four - one more than any other performer (including myself - three songs each).

It's exciting - I've never done anything like this before. And the only things I've ever planned this far in advance have been some vacations - but those involved only me, or at the most, two other people. This looks like it will involve more than two dozen, and really, many more.

People's enthusiasm leads me to suspect this should be a fun time. I can't wait, but being it's in August, almost four months out, I will have to.

I'm so grateful for this opportunity.

Forty-to-forty-five years ago, playing bass with a Soul review, I spent a lot of time in small bars in predominantly black neighborhoods.

Last night I 'went home', playing bass at an open mic in a black neighborhood in Syracuse.

What a breath of fresh air! And what a unique experience - in the past, all the time I spent in places like that I was gigging, there were never any open mics or jam sessions other than for jazz players.

The warmth and enthusiasm of the other musicians and audience, and hearing many old and new soul songs and instrumentals, really warmed my soul. It was great. I got a warm reception for my playing. I felt like an instantly embraced new resident of the neighborhood.

I am so grateful to have been invited, so grateful to have been invited to rediscover this kind of scene (and to have lived long enough and be healthy enough to enjoy it).

#1836, Wednesday, April 12: Out of the mating game

I think I have entered the point in life where my most attractive feature to women is that I am non-threatening.

Since I no longer play the mating game, the only thing I want from women is friendship. Women seem to be responding to that.

A few of the women musicians (and/or wannabe's) I know have found my supportive attitude nurturing, but I think that is just a side-effect. Being supportive and honest is what friends do, but some of the women I spend time with find it very novel.

For me, it is just a relief not to be dealing with women from a place of need. I'm not looking to get married, I don't even want to be in a relationship. I am enjoying my independence, and don't want to have to make compromises based on another person's view of reality.

As far as not playing the mating game, well, I'm glad not to be in that mix. I don't need someone to "complete me". I'll be complete when I'm dead.

Grateful that my happiness isn't dependent on others, especially not a significant other.

#1835, Tuesday, April 11: What do you expect?

My friend Jerry is in Crete. He wrote that any expectations he had formed "...were lightly taken ..and good..cuz so far not one thing has gone according any fantasy i might of had;-)"

The problem with expectations isn't only that having them sets you up for disappointment. The bigger problem, to me, is that having them limits how you experience things unfolding before you.

It is a well-noted part of the human experience to have confirmation bias - which means noting those things that confirm your beliefs and ignoring or just not perceiving what doesn't. That is how your expectations, your fantasies about the future, limit your ability to perceive what is going on in the present, even as it moves along our senses absorbing the future as it does. While you are comparing what arrives in the present with the map you made in the past, you will miss actually seeing what is.

And it is not only in the realm of future-tripping, but in relationships. We form expectations of human behavior based on our beliefs. We make rules, many arbitrary, about how people should relate to people, how people should behave. We assume everybody thinks like us, or should. We build societal rules based on ideals of human behavior, and to establish safety from those who don't recognize our rules. And we then create expectations that everybody should follow the rules, whether they've been published and established, or exist only in our heads.

But that idea violates a belief I have (as concisely stated by the Diana St. Ruth quote that sits at the bottom of any email I send): "You cannot change the past, arrange the future to suit yourself, or make other people say and do the things you want them to say and do."

Therefore, your concept of friendship shouldn't be fixed. Your friendships will form on sharing experiences, but not necessarily on perceiving those experiences identically. Many people believe that friendship is based on reciprocity, on maintaining an even balance of accounts (I made you feel good, you make me feel good). In that belief, even benefitting from an imbalance imperils the friendship.

I don't define friendship, and I don't expect my friends to follow my imagined rules, to live up to or meet my expectations. I don't presume to know what reality looks like to other people (I barely know what it means to me), so it seems a bit silly to judge). Yes, that has limits - I will not tolerate violence or expressed hatred. But that is, if you will, published law, tribal, not personal, expectation.

I'm not perfect with this by any means, but to the extent I succeed, my lack of expectations, judgment and definition hasn't cost me many friends.

#1834, Monday, April 10: Friendship and kindness trump a bad jam

Monday nights I jam with a couple of guys I met recently.

I want to not do it, because the music doesn't really sound good to me. It is difficult for me, because I think they're both musical and they are definitely both good guys and friends. The problem is that they aren't playing near my level. It isn't a matter of talent, it's a matter of how developed their playing is.

I'll keep going, though, for a couple of reasons:

The first is that, as I said, there is the potential for the music to improve and become better and more satisfying (to me), and, since as an ensemble of musicians with diverse tastes and backgrounds, there is also the possibility of creating something new and refreshing. I don't think they are untalented, and I know that playing with someone with decades more experience in music will make them better musicians - that is the primary way I developed as a musician. They have chosen me, and I feel somewhat obligated to give back in that way.

The bigger reason? I can't come up with a good reason to not continue on with them that will not be hurtful to them. It is hard to justify causing them that pain when there is really no cost or inconvenience involved in sparing them that.

So, it will continue, and I am grateful for the multitude of opportunities in so many areas of my life that this little jam affords me.

I have learned and now performed Leonard Cohen's song First We Take Manhattan which I first heard on Jennifer Warnes' fabulous CD, Famous Blue Raincoat (Songs of Leonard Cohen).

I haven't played that CD in more than a decade, now, but there was a time it was in constant rotation. It was the first good-sounding CD I ever heard (when they first came out, I thought CDs sounded vastly inferior to LPs. I was right, they did, although better playback and recording technology improved their sound considerably, they still don't sound as good).

This is my favorite album of Leonard Cohen's songs. Warnes was his backup singer for decades. She had a couple of hit songs on her own, and has a classically beautiful voice. But this album's superior production and arrangements really made it/make it stand out. Leonard Cohen wrote some songs just for the album, sings a little backup, and does a duet with Warnes on one cut (he sings the Fire, she sings Joan on Joan of Arc, a masterpiece).

I finally got around to re-listening to the album - whew! it still sounds great, it still moves me with every listen. Among other things, I'd forgotten the stellar cast of musicians involved. It's just an all around.

I put a youTube version on Facebook today, along with some thoughts, similar to the above. Just want people to listen.

I am very grateful to have had the experience of the CD, and to be able to share it.
